What do you guys think of the hate John Green is getting for the metaphor scene in TFIOS?

sunroofs:

Ignorance spreads like wildfire. Most people spreading hate do not understand the concept of the character. Yes he is pretentious, yes he is cocky, all that is deliberate. The whole point of Augustus character is that he puts on a mask to hide his real identity, the whole cocky collected teen who is always in control slowly falls apart throughout the book to reveal what he really is in the end, a scared little boy whose biggest fear is looming upon him. That’s what makes him who he is, and we get to experience his change with him and that is great.
